Kosovo: see the peculiar national library in Pristina

While in Pristina, don’t miss the National Library of Kosovo!! (Biblioteka Kombëtare e Kosovës).

It was designed by the Croatian architect Andrija Mutnjakovi? and inaugurated in November 1982. Its building has quite a peculiar shape… resembling nothing but a Library.

Ugly? Artistic? Futuristic? Brutalist? Prison-like?

Some say it mixes Byzantine and Islamic architectural forms, some others say it combines modern style with regional traditions and rural architecture, or that it reconciles relations between Albanians and Serbians. The 73 white domes could also represent the albanian hat “plisi”.

Whatever it is meant to represent, it is quite unique…
