Vietnam: bike through rice fields in Tam Coc

Tam Coc has the most famous rice fields of the Red River Delta in Vietnam, about 2 hours drive from Hanoi.

Rice production in Vietnam is an important food supply, and Vietnam is one of the largest consumer of rice in the world and worldwide exporter. Vietnamese people call rice the “white gold”. I saw those fields in Tam Coc in november, but it seems the best time to see them is in may/june, when the fields are covered with a yellow color at harvest time, giving it the name of ‘golden rice’. It seems though that during that time, there are many tourists coming to photograph those fields! I’m happy I saw it at another time of the year, without the surroundings being full of tourists.

Going through the rice fields was for me a must-do at some time.  Cycling through the countryside is a great way to do it! You can rent a bike in the village and go wander around the rice fields. It is not easy to talk to the locals as most of them do not speak English. Nevertheless, a smile is worth a thousand words…
